LAUSD Raising Safety Measures After Shooting In Texas School

On May 24, 2022, there was a shocking shooting incident in Uvalde. As a direct response to it, the Los Angeles Unified School District announced more safety protocols to use for the schools that come under it.

Reduced entry points in schools, enhanced access to mental health for students, and extended communication with America’s first responders will be among the measures.

LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stated that it has been seen that if someone could readily access guns with no filter, it would mean that any US location can be dangerous. It applies to a cinema theater, a temple, a school, a church or even a grocery shop. Carvalho added that it is important to keep assessing and updating safety protocols to keep LA’s students, families and workers maximum safe.

The district plans on exploring GPS-enabled apps that would let first responders know about critical incidents. It will also offer first responders campus maps so that they can assess the areas in school in the course of a crisis in a better way.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is yet to announce more details about the process of implementing the school safety changes. However, Carvalho suggested that LAUSD and the Public Policy Institute of California would work together to address mental health-related crises.

Carvalho stated that it is important to declare that offering mental health solutions and identifying troubling signs must entail the compassion, awareness and collective resources of the whole community.

The shooting incident in Uvalde contributed to 21 fatalities, including 19 students. As per local officials, an armed person aged 18 years got into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde and shot around 25 times.

The incident may be under investigation, but there have been conflicting accounts of it. At first, it was thought that the gunman confronted law enforcement before he entered the school. However, the Texas Department of Public Safety stated that the suspect known as Salvador Ramos got into the location with no resistance.

As per local officials, Ramos posted private details on Facebook suggesting that he would be involved in a Texas school shooting incident.
