LAUSD Schools Ban Cloth Masks

The Los Angeles Unified School District will not permit the utilization of cloth face masks any longer. The move is part of LAUSD-wide masking regulations, which require higher-grade face masks featuring nose bridge wires.

The LAUSD regulation applies to staffers and students; LAUSD employers must wear at least surgical-grade face masks whether they go outdoors or indoors.

It comes as a response measure to the transmission of the Omicron strain as well as LA Public Health’s officials suggesting surgical, KN95 or N95 masks for residents instead of cloth masks.

The District requires mask use always; schools will offer the masks that suit people who require those.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Megan Reilly stated that 80% of LAUSD students and 100% of its staffers are vaccinated.

Reilly stated that the added layers of coronavirus protection come as the District knows that people have apprehension over the transmission of this virus. The District prioritizes protecting schools in LA and thanked everyone for doing their part in its effort.

Existing guidelines require LAUSD staffers and students with COVID-19 positive test results to isolate themselves for five days or more before they can come back to campus for in-person education.

LA County has had a decline in the COVID-19 positive case count since the record number of the cases for one day in January. Nevertheless, over 4,500 people got hospitalized due to coronavirus, at least 3800 more than the number before December 23 last year.
